The "Review Report for Metropolitan Denver and South Platte River and

Tributaries, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska," published in September 1977,

formulated a nwnber of plans designed to insure the hydrologic adequacy of Cherry

Creek Lake. The report concluded that structural plans would be costly and

socially and environmentally objectionable, It: recommended that rel.eases of up

to 5tOOO c.f.s. be made from Cherry Creek LakE! regardless of downstrl:am channel

condi tions. This policy of prompt drawdown of 'the Cherry Creek Lake pool would

allow the asswnption of a half-full flood control pool /it the beginning of the

Probable Maximwn Flood (PMF). Using the PMF es'timated at that date, the Cherry

Creek Lake embankment would not be overtopped with that: assumption, In view of

the relatively high reservoir releases needed on ChHrry Creek, it was also

recommended that an emergency evacuation plan be developed.

In May 1983, the Omaha District submHted a Design Memorandum (DI1) entitled
"Rehabilitation of Spillway Channel, South Pla.tte River, Cberry Creek Lake,
Colorado." Tree removal from the spillway channel was recommended :en this DM,
This recommendation was approved and removal of the trees was accompli.shed in
1983,

In January 1985, the Omaha Disuict submit.ted DM CC-ll entitled "Spillway

Performance Review." Various options were considered to rehabilitate the

spillway channel for dam safety purposes. The recommended plan was to implement

a periodic maintenance plan to remove trees and other vegetation from the

spillway channel.

In May 1985, DM CC-IO "Sediment Removal" >las publish"d. This DM looked into

the problem of the emergency gates becoming sil ted in a1: the intake structure.

Several tlflushing" operations were conductE~d as a result of this Dt1 and a

recommended flushing schedule was approved in which accumu.lated deposits upstream

of the service gates would be periodically flushed through the outlet works to

prevent a severe buildup of sediment that would prevent the emergency gates from

being lowered,

5
