rainfall in the area between the Continental Divide and the 103rd meridian. The

103rd meridian is approximately the eastern border of Colorado. The initial

report was published in March 1984 as Hydromereorological Report No. 55

(generally referred to as HMR 55). A revised report with significant changes in

the high mountain values, but only slight changes in the high plains area (Cherry

Creek basin) was published in 1988 as HMR 55A. The final PMP values for the

Cherry Creek basin were available and are used in this report. These probable

maximum precipitation values were applied to the Cherry Creek basin by the Omaha

District, Corps of Engineers, and resulted in a probable maximum flood which was

considerably greater than previous estimates. It was found that this flood, if

it occurred at Cherry Creek Lake, would overtop the embankment.

The study has been conducted in accordance with the procedures in

"Guidelines for Evaluating Modifications of Existing Dams Related to Hydrologic

Deficiencies," Institute for Water Resources (IWR) Report 86-R-7, Department of

the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, D.C., October 1986.

This reconnaissance report is submitted for review and approval and serves

as the basis for proceeding to the next phase of investigations. Approval of

this reconnaissance report would provide authorization to prepare a Dam Safety

Assurance Evaluation Report for the improvements to Cherry Creek Dam.

PRIOR STUDIES AND REPORTS

A survey report on Cherry Creek and its tributaries was submitted by the

Omaha District in March 1939. It recommended that two dams be constructed on

Cherry Creek. One would be constructed at the former Castlewood Dam site and the

other about 1-1/2 miles upstream from the Kenwood Dam. Kenwood Dam was a

relatively small dam constructed by local interests in the 1930' s just downstream

from the present Cherry Creek Lake site. Castlewood Dam was an old irrigation

2
