street to Juniper Avenue. Parkside Park
200 feet wide as it crosses Iris Avenue.
G1enwood Avenues are within a 200 to 350

is flooded. The floodplain is approximately
Commercial buildings between lris and
fee':. floodplain.

sparse. As such, floodwaters which are confined to the well defined channel do
not cause extensive damage. It is only to the west of Broadway, where scme
residential development occurs that the floodplain begins to widen and bui1dinss
are flooded. Lee Hil1 Road which roughly parallels the channel within this
section is flooded over 85 percent of its length.

South of G1enwood Avenue to the creeks confluence with Goose Creek, the
floodplain widens and floods several commercial properties. The floodplain
extends as far east as 28th Street within this section. Once the floodplain
reaches 28th Street, it acts as a"conduit for the floodwaters. The floodplain is
uniformly wide within this section approximately 450 feet. The depth of flooding
is greater than 2 feet.

The extent of the flooding increases between Broadway and Folsom Avenue. This is
due to a general leveling of the basin f100r and the influence of Wonderland
Creek. Fourmile Creek diverts approximately 400 cfs to Wonderland Creek wit;,;n
this section. The pattern of city streets also influence the floodplain within
this portion of the basin. Violet Avenue on the south side of the stream halts
the southern expansion of floodwaters and diverts water towards 19th Street.
Floodwaters cross Violet Avenue. Tile resulting sheetflow to the southeast travels
aPRroximately 700 feet west of 19th Street. Flooding is between 0.2 and 0.5 feet
in this dominant residential area. Sheetf10w continues downstream. To the west
of Folsom, the floodplain is approximately 1200 feet wide. Upstream of Folsom,
Topaz Drive is flooded over its eastern ~alf and Riverside Road is completely
flooded.

Wonderland Creek

Property damage from floodwaters is extensive within the upstream portion of
Wonderland Creek near its source. The floodplain between Broadway and 5th Street
varies from 450 to 850 feet wide. Shallow flooding occurs between those streets
with depths ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 feet. All of Riverside and Sumac Avenues
and half of Tamarak Avenue are flooded bet'ileen Broadway and 5th Streets. In
addition, 17 residential buildings are flooded.

Downstream of 15th through 19th Street and Folsom to the Longmont Diagonal, the
.
floodplain narrows and damage is light, as few buildings are located within the
floodplain. Between Centennial Junior High School and 26th Street the channel
has undergone some real ignment and the floodplain has been modi fi ed due to
development in the north overbank area. East of the Longmont Diagonal the
floodplain widens to 700 feet, but is then restricted by Iris Avenue which
transports floodwaters downstream to 34th Street. Downstream of 34th Street the
floodplain is narrow through a residential area and widens as it leaves that area
and crosses the Colorado Southern Railroad. Upstream of Valmont Road, a small
amount of flow is diverted to the east: where shal10w flooding occurs along the
north side of the Union Pacific R.R. right-of-way. Most of the flow continues
acroSS Valmont and the regraded railroad right-of-way to the south where it is
intercepted by the improved north Goose Creek Channel. Property dcrrage within this
section of the stream is not high as few buildings are located within the floodplain.

The large culvert at Folsom Street limits the flooding of the street to
approximately 200 feet. East of Folsom and west of the 28th Street bypass the
floodplain extends to the northeast more than 1200 feet, although damage is
light as only 7 buildings are within this area. However, to the east of the 28th
Street bypass, the damage increase dramatically. Several residential buildings
are flooded between the 28th Street bypass and 30th Street. The floodplain
extends from 450 to 600 feet to the north of Fourmile Canyon Creek within this
section.

Dama ge due
is 1 ight.

to flooding
Betwee~ the

within the upstream portion of Fourmile Canyon Creek
upstream study limit and Broadway, development is ve~y

From 30th Street downstream for approldmately 1500 feet, channel improvements
have been constructed through a residential development which confine the 100-
year flood to a width of 130 feet. From the downstream limits of these channel
improvements to the creeks confluence with Boulder Creek, the floodplain remains
wide and shallow. Damages are light within this do~mstream section as few
buildings are located within the floodplain. The stream crosses 47th Street, the
Longmont Diagonal. 57th Street and 61st Street on its way to Boulder Creek. Wide
sections of these streets and roads incur shallow flooding.

Fourmile Canyon Creek

2<)
