Currently, Malta 1a participating in the regular program under <br />the National Flood Insurance Act. <br /> <br />,aOBLEX IDERTIFICATIOI <br /> <br />BASIR DESCJ.IP'lION <br /> <br />A description of the existing physical, envirotlllental, social, <br />economic, and cultural settings for the city of Malta follows below. <br /> <br />PHYSICAL SETrIRG <br />The MUk River hu its origin in Glecier National Park in north. <br />western Montana and flows eut through northern Montana and southern <br />Alberta Provinee, Canada. It joins the M1asouri Il1ver juat dovnatream <br />from Fort Peck Dam in northeast Montana. The MUk River drains about <br />22,300 square mUes. The drainage area is approx1llately 11,800 square <br />ailes where it reaches Malta. The total basin is about 340 miles long <br />(east to west) and 60 aUes wide (north to south). Approx1llately <br />60 percent of the basin is loeated within the United States. Figure 1 <br />shows the MUk River basin. Rangeland, as well as dryland and irrigated <br />cropland, is predominate in the area. <br /> <br />ENVIllONKENTAL SETTING <br />The MUk aiver, which drains a large part of northern Montana, is <br />subject to periodic flooding. The stre.. follows a aeandering course and <br />1a sluggish during low-flow periods. The river 1a entrenched 20 to <br />25 feet below its flood plain and is about 60 to 75 feet wide.
