b. Designated Floodwa.y is the channel of a watercourse and that
portion of the adjoining flood plain required to provide for the passage
of a selected flood with an insignificant increase in flood stage above
that of natural conditions. Normally, the lOO-year flood (one that has
a l-percent chance of occurrence in any given year) would be considered
as the selected flood. An "insignificant increase- is nonnally considered
to be no greater than 1 foot unless a smaller increase is established by
State or local regulation.
c. Flood Fringe is that portion of the flood plain between the
designated floodway and the natural outline of the selected flood.
(This land can be considered for developnent, provided the area is
either filled to a required elevation or other floodproofing measures
are applied to protect against the flood hazard condition.)

~JLlCY*

To establish a uniform approach to floodway determinations, the

following guidelinesl are to be used in the initial developmental stage,

unless State or local governmental regulations have more restrictive

requ i rements :

a. The capacity of the Designated Floodway will be based on the

dis'charge of the flood that has a l-percent chance of occurrence in any

gh'en year.

*Excerpts from Reference 2.

lReferences 3 and 4 provide more detailed guidelines for Flood Insurance
Studies.

2
