given time, the flow is uniform. Otherwise, the flow is nonuniform,
and the relationship between kinetic energy and. potential energy will be

continuously changing. If flow is uniform. the water surface will be
parallel to the channel bottom. If not, the sl~pe of the water surface
profile will differ from that of the channel bottom.
If the rate of change of water surface slope is not visible to
the eye. the flow can be considered gradually varied. Rapidly varied
flow exists where the change in water surface slope is apparent to
the eye. such as at a hydraulic jump. The calculation of profiles
under rapidly varied flow conditions requires special treatment.

Section 3.04. Classification of Steady Flow Profiles

Figure 3.03 shows the general types of steady flow profiles.

M,
1 ~
On . 2
- ------ - \
T _ _ ..
Dc M - . --
~~ ~Dc>D

;,,~,. .. ,~, ...

""

ItoIlzoo"'"

-D>Dn>Dc
DiI.D.Dc

Mild slope
50>0, Dn.Dc

Steep slope
Sa-O, Dn< Dc

'h

-r--- c,
Dn'Dc ,;;--- -

Horlzontol

-

'--
#"...,.,......................./

Dn'CD

~

\
_n__ -- ---__ --7'J.-
,~oc

Crlticol lIope
S,,>O,D.,:Dc

,

Horizontal
~
-.1.,----

---l---/As

, ~,

Dn:CO

Horlzontol Iiope
50'0, Dn'oo

Ad.e,.. lIope
SoCO, Dn'oo

Fig. 3.03.

Classification of flow profiles
3.08
