2.l Scope of Study

This Flood Insurance Study covers the geographic area of Arapahoe
County, Colorado. The area of study is shown on the Vicinity Map
(Figure 1).

In addition to the South Platte River, the following streams were
studied by detailed methods and are included in this study: Bear
Creek, Big Dry Creek, Big Dry Creek Tributary A, Blackmer Gulch,
Box Elder Creek, Cherry Creek, Coal Creek, Comanche Creek, Little
On the South Platte River, just upstream of the City of Littleton,
the COE has constructed Chatfield Dam. The primary purpose of the
dam is flood-control and recreation. The dam is now operational
for flood-control purposes and, therefore, flood hazards downstream
are based on the dam's operation.

This study also illustrates the flood hazard delineations resulting
from a channel improvement project developed by the COE, Omaha,
Nebraska.

The areas studied by detailed methods were selected
given to all known flood hazard areas and areas
development or proposed construction through 1991.

with priority
of projected

.

Approximate analyses were used to study those areas having a low
development potential or minimal. flood hazards. The scope and
methods of study were proposed to, and agreed upon by, FEMA and
Arapahoe County.
