<br />Levee Closures <br /> <br />All openings through the levee must be provided with closure <br />devices that are structural parts of the system and designed <br />according to sound engineering prac1:ice. <br /> <br />structural Desiqn <br /> <br />Engineering analyses must dem.onstrate that no appreciable <br />erosion of the levee can be expect,~d during the base flood. The <br />stability of the levee embankment must be .~valuated. The potential <br />for and magnitude of future set1:l'~ment must be assessed to <br />demonstrate that freeboard will be maintained within 1:h,~ minimum <br />standards. <br /> <br />Intericr Drainaqe <br /> <br />wt,en the drainage structures through a levee system. are closed <br />because of high flows, flooding may resu11: em the landward side of <br />the levee system due to the baCkup of interior drainage. If such <br />floodir,g is possible, an analysis must be submitted that identifies <br />t.he sources of flooding and the extent of the flooded area. If the <br />average, depth is more than 1 foot, t,he wat:er surface elevations of <br />the bas,e (IOO-year) flood must be determined. <br /> <br />Operation and Maintenance <br /> <br />Fe,r a levee system to be r<~co~rnized, it must be operated <br />according to an officially adopted operat:ion manual.
