<br />Information report for the TOwn of poncha Springs, Chaffee County, <br />Colorado (Reference 1). <br /> <br />1.3 Coordination <br /> <br />In March 1978, Water Resources Consultants, Inc., Denver, Colorado, <br />pUblished a Flood Plain Information Report for the South Arkansas <br />River and poncha Creek in the TOwn of poncha Springs (Reference 1). <br /> <br />On May 30, 1985, the FEMA Regional Office in Denver, Colorado, <br />submitted the report for use in preparing a Flood Insurance Study <br />for the TOwn of Poncha Springs. The final community coordination <br />meeting with representatives from FEMA and the Town of poncha Springs <br />was held on February 24, 1986. No problems were raised at that <br />meeting. <br /> <br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study covers the incorporated <br />TOwn of poncha Springs, Chaffee County, Colorado. <br />study is shown on the Vicinity Map (Figure 1). <br /> <br />areas of the <br />The area of <br /> <br />The potential flooding sources within the corporate limits of poncha <br />Springs are the South Arkansas River and poncha Creek. <br /> <br />Flooding caused by the South Arkansas River was studied in detail <br />from a point approximately 0.45 mile downstream of its confluence <br />with Harrington Ditch, upstream to Limit Street on the western <br />corporate limit of poncha Springs. <br /> <br />Poncha Creek was studied in detail from its confluence with the <br />South Arkansas River, to a point approximately 0.5 mile upstream. <br /> <br />The areas studied by detailed methods were selected based on extent <br />and validity of available hydrologic and hydraulic data. <br /> <br />2.2 Community description <br /> <br />Poncha Springs is located in south-central Chaffee County, in central <br />Colorado. It is situated approximately 3 miles west of Salida, <br />and approximately 6 miles southeast of Maysville. <br /> <br />Population figures for the area indicate significant recent growth. <br />The 1970 population of Chaffee County was 10,162, and by 1980 it <br />had increased to 13,227. poncha Springs grew from 198 in 1970 to <br />321 in 1980. For Chaffee County and Poncha Springs, these figures <br />represent an increase of 30.2 percent and 62.1 percent, respectively <br />(Reference 2). <br /> <br />2 <br />
