48

Appendix A

.

USE OF PROGRAM PROFILE

Purpose of Program Profile

The program was written to provide a means of calculating water

surface profiles in natural channels where flow is near critical.

,

Means of data entry is simplified to the maximum extent to allow ease

of comparison for variations of cross-sectional geometries at any

,

given station or set of stations.

Equipment Requirement
This program was written F~RTRAN IV for execution on a CDC 6400.

It may be used on other computers with minor ehanges which have an

available storage of 16,000 units.

.

Program Description

Computations are accomplished in two basic parts. The first part

calculates a table of sectional properties at specified water level

increments. The second part then uses these computed sectional prop-

erties to solve for the water surface elevation at the section. The

water surface elevation is computed by an energy balance for subcriti-

cal flows, or from section properties when an energy balance cannot be

attained or computed velocity exceeds twenty feet per second. For

sub critical flows, a computational procedure based on the Standard

Step Method is used. Flows near critical or with a computed velocity

.

greater than allowable are computed by an equation similar to the weir

.

equation, This equation is:

Q = C ARm
s
