INTERAGENCY COMMITTEE ON DAM SAFETY TASK GROUP ON GLOSSARY OF TERMS Preamble The Interagency Committee on Dam Safety (ICODS) was established to provide the Federal agencies involved with dams an opportunity to coordinate their activi- ties in regard to dam safety. One of the goals of ICODS is to provide a com- mon forum for the agencies to exchange ideas and procedures that have been used and to provide an efficient mechanism for technical interchange. One of the essential needs for coordination among the Federal agencies is that each understands the meaning of words or terms used by the others. The entire dam building profession has evolved through various paths over many years. Prior to the establishment of ICODS, the Federal agencies had no formal means of coordination within the Federal establishment although many of the engi- neers of the various agencies have managed a certain amount of coordination through the various technical and professional groups such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Commission on Large Dams, the United States Committee on Large Dams, etc. The purpose of this report is to establish a common glossary of dam safety terms to be used, insofar as practicable, by the Federal agencies both within the agencies themselves as well as between agencies. The objective was to select terms that would be as general and generic as possible and be equally applicable to all dams regardless of size, type, or purpose. This glossary was developed by considerihg numerous glossaries developed by recognized authorities as indicated in the List of References and a blend of inputs from the various agencies', This report was prepared by a group selected by the Chair of ICODS and con- sisted of: Joseph S. Haugh, Chair, Department of Agriculture Jack Thompson, Corps of Engineers James Price, Tennessee Valley Authority Jack Brynda, Department of the Interior Brian Holtham, Department of the Interior Edward C. Pritchett, Corps of Engineers A draft report was reviewed by the ICODS member agencies and all comments received were considered in preparation of the final report. The final report was subsequently approved for adoption by ICODS on January 26, 1988.
