FUTURE FLOODS

This section of the report discusses the Standard Pro-

ject Flood and the Intermediate Regional Flood on Fountain Creek in

the vicinity of Pueblo, and some of the hazards of great floods.

The Standard Project Flood represents the rElasonable upper Limits

of expected flooding. Floods of Intermediate Regional Flood size

may be expected to occur more often, but thElY will not be as severEl

as the infrequent Standard Project Flood.

Large floods have occurred in the past on the Arkansas

River, Fountain Creek, and other tributaries in the general geo-

graphical and physiographical region of Pueblo. Heavy storms, sim-

ilar to those causing past floods, undoubtedly will recur over the

Fountain Creek watershed to cause future floods of similar or greater

size at Pueblo. In any determination of future' floods which may oc-

cur ~n a given stream, it is desirable to consider all storms and

floods that have occurred in the region on "Iat,,,o-sheds "lith similar

topography, watershed cover, and physical characteristics.

Determination of Intermediate Reqional Floo~

The Intermediate Regional Flood is defined as having

an average frequency of occurrence of once i.n 100 years, although

it may occur in any year and possibly even in successive years.

This flood is calculated from statistical analyses of streamflow

records available for the watershed under study and analyses of

rainfall and runoff characteristics of other streams in the "general

region of the watershed." As calculated for the Pueblo area, the

Intermediate Regional Flood represents a major flood which, althou~Jh

less severe than the Standard Project Flood, would be more severe

than the June 1965 flood on Fountain Creek i.n practically all

aspects.

32
