The woodlands. together with the cultivated fields. range lands
and numerous water courses provide excellent but limited wildlife
habitat. Upland game include jackrabbits. cottontails. quail.
pheasants and doves. A few deer and antelope frequent the area.
In addition, the Arkansas River is important to migrant water fowl.

Fishery resources in the Holly area are available in the Arkansas
River, irrigation canals and farm ponds. The fishery inhabiting these
sources include catfish, perCh. carp and trout. The trout fishery is
the result of a "put and take" operation in the abandoned Holly ni tch.

Mineral resources in the Holly area appear to be limited to sand
gravel deposits in the Arkansas River Valley.

There are no known historic sites in the vicinity of Holly.
Although the Santa Fe Trail did pass near the town. past land uses
have obliterated the "Old Trail, fl with the only recognition of its
occurrence being noted by a marker near the community.

HUMAN RESOURCES

The population of Holly has experienced slow growth since its
founding in 1896 and has been relatively stable for many years as
shown by the following census:

Year
T93ci
1940
1950
1960
1970
1973

Population
971
864
1.236
1.108
993
1.150-1.200 (estimated)

The surrounding rural population has also remained stable. Since agri-
culture is expected to remain the principal economic activity of the
area, the future population of Holly and the surrounding area is ex-
pected to remain relatively stable also.

Skills and occupations in the Holly area are those primarily
associated directly or indirectly with farming, processing of agri-
cultural products and cattle raising with many of the farm and ranch
workers and owners residing in the urban area of Holly. Agricultural
type skills and occupations in the Holly area are expected. to remain
dominant in the foreseeable future. However. if the present trend
of rural to urban population shift continues. skills and occupations
in the services area are likely to increase.

DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMY

The town of \lolly serves as the local trade center for the sur-
rounding livestock and farming industry which provides the chief

4

~
