Shortly after completion of the construction of the dam, Wickenburg experienced a major storm event. The dam impound area con- <br />tained water ilIat pmiously would have flowed through the streels, filling to 20% capacity and preventing a major deluge. <br />. .11,e danl proved effective again during Hurricane Nnra in 1997 and the severe stonus of October 2000. No flooding prohlems occurred <br />to North Wickenburg hecause the dam functioned as designed. <br />. Project cost of $5 million avoided $15 million in damage, based on current land values of 100 homes. <br />. Removed 100 homes from ille floodplain and reduced cost of flood insunll1ce to other homeowners. <br />. An immediate henefit from the darn project is that the area, which W'L' referred to as .'blighted," has now become Iivahle. <br />. Roads made impa.<sahle hy floods and dust when dl)' have now been paved, thus eliminating the daily dust control problems that come <br />with dirt roads. Therefore there are less health risks because of dust comrol. <br />. Construction of the dam also removed homes from the" 1 % chance llood"* event and map revision ha., since occurred. <br />.
