<br />A legal notice was placed in the Mountain Mail, one day a week, for <br />three consecutive weeks, begi nni ng October 23, 1979, to notify all <br />interested persons of the beginning of the study and its objectives <br />and to solicit any relevant facts and technical data concerning loca1 <br />fl ood hazards. <br /> <br />Federal, state and local agencies were contacted regarding the avail- <br />abil ity of any reports, studies, or investigations which may contain <br />infonnation relative to flooding problems in the community. Infonn<l- <br />tion was received from FEMA and CWeB. <br /> <br />During the course of the study, the results of hydrologic analyses <br />and flood elevations and boundaries, prepared by CWCB, were reviewed. <br />As a result of this review and coordination with FEMA and CWCB, the <br />information supplied was used in this Flood Insurance Study. <br /> <br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study <br />area of Salida, Colorado. <br />Map (Fi gure 1). <br /> <br />is confined to the designated incorporated <br />The area study is shown on the Vicinity <br /> <br />The limits of detailed and appro~imate studies in Salida were deter- <br />mined by FEMA with community and study contractor consultation at the <br />meeting in June, 1979. <br /> <br />Floods caused by overflow of the South Arkansas River were studied in <br />detail from the confluence with the Arkansas River to County Road <br />125. The areas studied by detailed methods were selected with prior- <br />ity given to all known flood hazard areas, and areas of projected <br />development or proposed construction for the next five years, through <br />January, 1985. <br /> <br />Floods caused by overflow of the Arkansas River were studied by <br />approximate methods, within the corporte Jimits of SaJida. <br />Approximate anal yses were used to study those areas having a low <br />deveJopment potential or minimal flood hazards. The scope and <br />methods of study were proposed to and agreed upon by FEMA, and the <br />City of Salida. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />The City of Salida is located in south central Colorado in the <br />eastern portion of Chaffee County approximately 90 miles west of <br />Pueblo, Colorado. The total land area contained within the corporate <br />boundaries is 1.7 square miles. The Colorado Population Report <br />Series CP-26 #79 (C-I) reported the popul ation of Sal ida in 1979, as <br />5,409 (Reference 2). Econonic activities of the area include cattle <br />ranching, tourism, and some small seal e mining, primarily for coal. <br />The Royal Gorge of the Arkansas River, a major tourist attraction, is <br />located at Canon City, 50 miles to the east.
