<br />The Colorado Springs Evening Telegraph of June 6, 1921 descri bes how the <br />Manitou and Pikes Peak Trolley line was destroyed along with parts of Ruxton <br />Avenue in many places".. . lower part of Ruxton Avenue was turned into a <br />raging river doing much damage to homes and businesses...structures along <br />Ruxton and Fountain Creeks had their foundations undermined and tumbled into <br />the waters...Williams flowed all night and debris blocked culverts and <br />flooded streets...Downtown Manitou threatened until tempora.ry dam was <br />constructed which diverted water from Williams Ca.non to enter Fountain Creek <br />farther down the creek.. .Fountain Creek swelled out of its banks along <br />Manitou Avenue." <br /> <br />The El Paso County Democrat of June 10, 1921 described how ma.ny <br />structures were completely destroyed a.nd the Mayor called for volunteers to <br />watch the creek during the night. <br /> <br />Flood of September 9, 1940 <br /> <br />This flood was the result of a heavy localized thunderstorm that <br />occurred over the southern part of Manitou Springs with the heaviest damage <br />taking place in the Plainview section. The cloudburst struck about 2 p.m. <br />a.nd lasted for only about an hour. <br /> <br />The Colorado Springs Daily Gazette of September 10, 1940 described how <br />Pawnee Avenue was the hardest hit with the street containing the flow of <br />water up to 3 feet in depth".. .debris left behind reached the floorboards <br />of cars.. .runoff from Pawnee a.nd El Paso poured through Manitou Avenue just <br />east of the business section...2.2 inches fell in 45 minutes; reported by <br />Plainview resident and 1.98 inches fell during the afternoon; as reported <br />frcm Ruxton Park." <br /> <br />Flood of May 10, 1947 <br /> <br />This flood was caused by a heavy thunderstorm which was centered over <br />the Williams and Waldo Canons north and west of Manitou Springs. <br />Thundershowers were occurring throughout the Manitou Springs' area during <br />the afternoon when extremely heavy downpours struck around 6 p.m. Table 6 <br />summarizes the flood damages which received extensive newspaper coverage. <br /> <br />-16- <br />
