<br />Plum Creek - Warm, unstabl,~, moist air moved int.o the are,a from the Gulf of <br />Mexioo and heavy rains fell over a relati vely long periocl. The most intense <br />storms hit on June 16 and '17 with 18 inches falling over the upper .Jimmy <br />Camp Creek basin near Falcon. This led to the ]"ighest flood flow to <br />drainage area ratio ever recorded in Colorado.. Six inch'ls fell west amj <br />southwe~lt of Manitou Springs, but no flooding occurred. <br /> <br />Manitou Springs and the upper Fountain Creek watershed oocupy the zone <br />subject to orographic type storms of the same type as th'~ P,anrose, <br />Monument/Cherry Creek and Plum Creek storms. <br /> <br />2. Hydr'ology <br /> <br />Fountain Creek rises in the Rampart Range near Woodland Park <br />approximately seven miles northwest of Pikes l'e,;.I" draining the northeast <br />slope of the mountain (see Figure ~). Flowing I'i(lutheast'~rly through Ute <br />Pass it drains an area of 71 square miles above Manitou Springs and is <br />charactEwized by steep slopes, rugged terrain, imd fores',. As fountain <br />Creek passes through Manitou Springs, the floodplain is l1eavi1y developed in <br />many places with city parks occupying the rema.imler of the spa,ce. Other <br />drainages impacting on Manitou Springs before they enter fountain Creek arE, <br />R1.lxton Creek, Williams Canon, Sutherland Creet, <\tld Beckel'S Lane Tri butary. <br /> <br />Huxton Creek has a drainage area of 17.6 :squaI'e miles above its <br />confluence with Fountain Creek and draiml the e,'estern fa'~e of Pike's Peale <br />The lJasin above Manitou Springs is charaeteriz,ed by steep slopes, rugged <br />terrain and forest, while within the city, th,a floodplain is heavJ.J.y <br />developed along and even over the channel. <br /> <br />lHUiams Canon has a drainage area of 2.6,9 'Hluare miles and drains the <br />area nopth of U. S. Highway 2~ near the Cave of 1;tle Winds. The basin above <br />U.S, Highway 2~ is a steep-walled canyon, while below the channel flows <br />through residential neighborhoods. The channEll is contained In a concrete <br />culvert for its last 1100 feet along Canon Avenue before enter'ing fountain <br />Creel< . <br /> <br />Sutherland Creek has a drainage area of 5,37 square miles and drains t.he <br />aT'ea south of the city. The upper basin is for,wted while the lower basin <br />consists of moderately developed residential ne:.gl1borhoods. <br /> <br />Beckers Lane Tributary has a drainagE! area of .88 square wiles and <br />dr'ains the area near Beckers Lane along the norl;l1east side of the city.
