thunderstorms which, due to t.he intense .localJ.zeli rain, lead 1;0 high runoff
rates and localized flooding. The large triangular area between Castle
Rock, Colorado Springs and the forks of I;he Bi.jou Creek south of Byers, has
a history of repeated cloudbursts unequaled aJ.oi1iS the f'ront Range. The
localization of cloudburst,s in this area is influenced by the orographic
effects of the Palmer Divide. Precipitation from these storms has reached
levels greater than that produced by tropical c:;clones (Hansen, 1973).

The probable maximum precipitation for the i'1ani tou Springs area is
delineated in Table 1. Figure 2 maps data OIl probable maximum preeipitation
for the Pikes Peak Region. Rainstorms of 35 or even 17 inches are rare;
however, they have occurred. There have been s'overal storms in the Pikes
Peak region that have led to extensive nOeding (see Table 2). Storms
between the continental divide and the plains al.e causE~d by one of the
following situations: cold front, tropical cyclone, complex convective
storm, or simple convective storm. Figurl' 3 sho,"" the maximum r'ecorded
pl'ecipitation for EI Paso and surrounding counties. Note that Manitou
Springs has received seven inches in one storm. Other stor'ms J.n the regior,
have dropped as much as 211 inches in a sIngle storm, as recorded in Elbert
County.

___________._________n______Rm________.~~._~.~~:~'~_n___H______3'm~_~~__~mu_n~=~

TABLE 1

PROBABLE MAXIMUM PRECIPITATION r'Of!
