the 100-year flood by dike, levee,
or other water control structure; also
areas subject to certain types of 100-
year shallow flooding where depths
are less than 1.0 foot; and areas subject
to 100-year flooding from sources with
drainage areas less than 1 square mile.
Zone B is not subdivided.

Zone C:

Areas of minimal flooding.

The flood elevation differences, Flood Hazard Factors, flood insur-
ance zones, and base flood elevations for each flooding source
studied in detail in the community are summarized in Table 3.

5.4 Flood Insurance Rate Map Description

The Flood Insurance Rate Map for Naturita is, for insurance purposes,
the principal result of the Flood Insurance Study. This map (pub-
lished separately) contains the official delineation of flood
insurance zones and base flood elevation lines. Base flood ele-
vation lines show the locations of the expected whole-foot water-
surface elevations of the base (lOO-year) flood. This map is devel-
oped in accordance with the latest flood insurance map preparation
guidelines published by the Federal Insurance Administration.

6.0 OTHER STUDIES

A Flood-Prone Area Map for San Miguel River, including Naturita, was
prepared by the u.S. Geological Survey in 1964 (Reference 13). The
100-year flood boundaries were estimated from regional stage-frequency
relations. The Federal Insurance Administration prepared a Flood Hazard
Boundary Map for Naturita in May 1974 and it was revised on January
9, 1976 (Reference 12).

This study supersedes the Flood-Prone Area Map and the Flood Hazard
Boundary Map because more detailed methods were used to delineate the
flood plain.

A hydrology report for upper San Miguel River was completed in May 1977
as a Technical Addendum (Reference 7) for the San Miguel County Flood
Insurance Study (Reference 14). The hydrologic data compiled for the
San Miguel County report were used in the determination of floodflows
for this study. The discharge of San Miguel River at Naturita gage
in this Flood Insurance Study varied from that in the hydrology report
of 1977 (Reference 7).

This study is authoritative for the purposes of the National Flood Insur-
ance Program; data presented herein either supersede or are compatible
with all previous determinations.

14
