1.3 Coordination

In correspondence dated September 22, 1983, FEMA requested that
the Technical Evaluation Contractor, Dames & Moore, prepare a Flood
Insurance Study for the unincorporated areas of Yuma County based
on data from the COE report (Reference 1).

The final coordination meeting was held on July 31, 1984, and was
attended by representatives of FEMA, the study contractor, and the
county. No problems were raised at the meeting.

2.0 AREA STUDIED

2.1 Scope of Study

This Flood Insurance Study covers the unincorporated areas of Yuma
County, Colorado. The area of study is shown on the Vicinity Map
(Figure 1).

Flooding on the North Fork Republican River was studied by detailed
methods from the eastern county boundary with Dundy County, Nebraska,
to a point 42 miles upstream of that county boundary.

The areas studied by detailed methods were selected based on the
extent and validity of available hydrologic and hydraulic data.

Chief Creek was studied by approximate methods, however, upstream
of Road FF the flood plain is less than 200 feet wide, and is there-
fore not shown.

Areas not included in this study are the Towns of Eckley and Yuma
and the City of Wray.

2.2 Community Description

Yuma County is located approximately 135 miles east of Denver in
northeastern Colorado. The county is bounded by Chase and Dundy
Counties, Nebraska, and Cheyenne County, Kansas, to the east, Kit
Carson County to the south, Washington County to the west, and
Logan and Phillips Counties to the north.

The population of the unincorporated areas of Yuma County was 1,641
in 1980, a decrease of 60 percent from the 1970 population of 4,139
(Reference 2).

The headwaters of the North Fork Republican River basin originate
within Yuma County approximately 15 miles southwest of Wray.
