flood warnings which are pr~tly disseminated to all ne~s media
and local officials by the be~t communications available, includIng
telephone and teletype.
A community flash flood reporting network of river and
rainfall stations and" flood ~arnin9' program developed and operated
in connection with the 24-hour weather ~ervice radar faCility could
minimize loss of life and movable property in the event of a major
flood. Such an arrangement would require that local river and rain-
fall reports be communicated promptly to responsible local officials
and to the Weather Service Office for evaluation and analysis. These
data and the analysis would be used to ~rn accurately forewarn ccn-
munity representatives of potontial storm and flood conditions.
Flood Fiqhtinq Emergency Evacuation Plans. There are
no formal plans for flood fightIng and emergency evacuation in La
Veta. However, alerting area residents and coordinating rescuo
operatIons in time of ~rgencies arC accomplished through the local
police and fire departments.
,~terial Storage on the ?lood Pl~ins. Certuin types of
material "toro><! in areas subject to flooding pose potentially dan-
gerous situations. For example, toxic, explosive, Or flammable
material usually stored in tanks and similar float~le containcr~,
if unrestrained, could be carried downstrc~ to threaten other
communities. While there is no known storage of this type presently
on the Cucharas River, care should be taken to avoid storage of
this nature in the future.
Most likeLY to be present on the fLood pLains in La Veta
and viciniey are ~cattered stores of timber. lumber, and oeller
similar floatable material.

Co.
