2

flood control improvements, or natural processes. Prior to utili-
zation of this report for planning or design purposes, the user
is advised to contact the Urban Drainage & Flood Control District
or the Colorado Water Conservation Board to determine if the in-
formation in this report has been amended.

Goldsmith Gulch. Along the gulch in Arapahoe County, certain
high density developments are planned with other reaches of
the channel remaining unchanged from their natural condition.

The report was prepared by Gingery Associates, Inc., Consulting
Engineers, Englewood, Colorado, at the request of the Urban
Drainage & Flood Control District.

Goldsmith Gulch is tributary to Cherry Creek with the confluence
near Monaco Boulevard, approximately four miles downstream of
the Cherry Creek Dam. The regional location of Goldsmith Gulch
and two tributaries included in this study is shown on Sheet 1 of
20. The study area extends from Cherry Creek approximately eight
miles southeast and upstream to Arapahoe Road in Arapahoe County.
Through this reach of Goldsmith Gulch, 17 major roads and high-
ways cross the gulch as does the Highline Canal. Development has
encroached up to the Gulch, particularly through Denver, where
various structural improvements have been made to provide a
limited degree of conveyance for flood flows.

Acknowledgements

Survey control data for this study was collected and compiled by
Western Control of Golden, Colorado, and Gingery Associates, Inc.
of Englewood, Colorado. The topographic mapping was prepared by
Kucera and Associates, Inc., of Denver, Colorado. The mapping
and survey control were completed under a separate contract with
the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District.

- STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION -

The Southmoor Park Tributary drains into the main gulch at a point
just upstream of Dartmouth Avenue. The study area extends ap-
proximately 0.7 miles upstream into the Southmoor development in
southeast Denver. The study area includes the large Southmoor
Park located just south of Hampden Avenue between Poplar and
Oneida Way. The park area serves as a detention pond which re-
duces flood magnitudes from the tributary through the reach down-
stream of Hampden Avenue. In addition to the Hampden Avenue
crossing, a second road crossing has been constructed across this
tributary.

The Flood Hazard Area Delineation Study for Goldsmith Gulch includes
the main stream of Goldsmith Gulch and two tributaries identified
as the Southmoor Park Tributary and the West Tributary. The study
area extends through three communities including the City and
County of Denver, the City of Greenwood Village and Arapahoe County.
The main stream of Goldsmith Gulch downstream of Belleview Avenue,
as well as the Southmoor Park Tributary, is located within the City
and County of Denver. Between Belleview Avenue and Orchard Road,
the main stream of Goldsmith Gulch and the lower reach of the West
Tributary traverses through Greenwood Village. The upper portion
of the study area, upstream of Orchard Road, is located in an
unincorporated part of Arapahoe County.

The West Tributary joins the main gulch at a point approximately
one-half mile north of Orchard Road. The study reach of this
tributary extends approximately 1.2 miles south from the confluence
to Peakview Avenue. Two road crossings are included in this study
reach. Other than culvert improvements constructed as part of
Orchard Road and peakview Avenue, the tributary remains in a
natural condition.

Through Denver, the study area is primarily urbanized or in the
process of development. The reach of the drainageway through
Greenwood Village is planned for development with low density
residential and office park land uses in the areas adjoining
