Because the urban water supply manager~ have done
an excellent jab of planning and executing water management strategies for
munic1pal water supply purposes, there may be little or no relea~e of South
Platte River water from Chatfield Reservoir for lengthy periods.

LO'.<I Flow Hydrology
Our lng drought year~ the flow in the South Pl atte River is low. Monthly
ave~ age d; scharges for 1973 (dry year) at three 1 ocat ions in the cord dor
are shown in Table 1::.6.

For the Denver municipal water system there are large diversion structures
on the South Platte River upstream from Chatfield Reservoir. The~e faCili-
ties have the capacfty to divert more water than they have historically.
The water diverted into the Denver municipal system travels through a
network of water distribution 1 ine~ and sewage collection 1 ines and return~
to the South Platte near Sand Creek below Denver as treatedsewageefflu_
'~nt. Thi~ route bypasses the river channel between Denver's intake and the
Denver Metro Sewage Treatl11<"nt Plant.

TABLE 111-6
SOUTH PLATTE R1VER LOW FLOW HYDROLOGY

Month

Littleton OenverGage Henderson Gage
Gage at 19th St. ~ear llenderson
39 78 161
44 84 229
56 " 168
51 101 197
82 218 405
164 22'1 539
174 294 51'
146 197 3ll
58 88 215
42 67 14.
60 tI6 173
35 84 m

Oownstream irrigation demands would be met with sewage effluent relea~es
from Oenver Metro, with Clear Creek and Sand Creek natural flow, and with
other inflow from downstream tributaries. As the Oenvermunic1pal water
system and its service area grows the {)env!'r i'letro sewdgf' effluent rlis-
chdrge~ wi 11 increase.
