<br />I <br />:1 <br />'I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />'I <br />I <br />I <br />II <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />, <br /> <br />II <br /> <br />Appendix A <br />River Management Tool Procednres <br /> <br />Flood Hazard Mitil!ation Stratel!ies <br /> <br />There are four basic mitigation strategies: <br />I) Prevention, <br />2) Property Protection, <br />3) Flood Control, <br />4) Emergency Services. <br /> <br />Each strategy has different measures that are appropriate for different conditions as follows: <br /> <br />I) Prevention: <br /> <br />Planning, acquiring, or regulating the development of land to prevent problems from flourishing. <br />Administration of preventive measures is usually accomplished through zoning, planning and code <br />enforcement. <br /> <br />2) Property Protection: <br /> <br />Protecting individual buildings or properties from flood damage. Properly protection measures are <br />usually the responsibility of property owners, although government agencies provide information, <br />technical and financial assistance. <br /> <br />3) Flood Control: <br /> <br />Keeping floodwaters away from an area. Flood control activities are designed to manage <br />floodwaters in basically two manners: structural and non-structural. <br /> <br />4) Emergency Services: <br /> <br />Measures taken during a flood to minimize flood impact.
