<br />I <br />1 <br /> <br />1.0 <br /> <br />PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF REPORT <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />1 <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />1 <br /> <br />The purpose of this report is to present the findings of a <br />reconnaissance investigation regarding the development of viable <br />mitigation measures to lessen the flooding problems along the <br />Limon Watershed Tributaries to Big Sandy Creek at Limon. <br />Colorado. The report will describe and illustrate protective <br />measures for the study l'each including costs and benefits. The <br />investigations. findings. and recommendations are intended to <br />aid the Town of Limon in Obtaining financial assistance to <br />develop and implement a plan-of-improvement which will mitigate <br />future economic losses from floods. <br /> <br />2.0 AREA OF REPORT <br /> <br />The area for this investigation and report <br />Rock I s land Ra i 1 road tracks. thence upstream to <br />of the East. Middle and West Limon Watershed <br />total distance of approximately .3 mile. <br /> <br />begins at the <br />the confluence <br />tributaries. a <br /> <br />3.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE REPORT AREA <br /> <br />Limon is located in northwestern Lincoln County. in <br />east-central Colorado. and is completely surrounded by <br />unincorporated Lincoln county land. The town lies 90 miles west <br />of the Kansas-Colorado border and 85 miles southeast of Denver. <br />The 1985 population of Limon was 1.768. This population has <br />remained constant since 1970. However. population projections <br />indicate moderate growth will occur in the future. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />Limon lies within the Colorado piedmont section of the Great <br />Plains physiographic province. Elevations range from over 5.380 <br />feet to less than 5.340 feet. Soi Is in the area are <br />predominately silty clay loams developed from shale of the <br />pierre formation. <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />1 <br />I <br />I <br />1 <br /> <br />The climate is semiarid. of which 76 percent occurs during <br />summer. Torrent ia 1 summer thunders torms tha t occur over sma 11 <br />areas and have short durations are typical of this area. The <br />average annual snowfall is approximately 25 inches. The recorded <br />temperatures have ranged from a high of 104 degrees F to a low <br />of -30 degrees F. The mean daily temperature is 47.1 degrees F. <br />The frost-free growing season averages 140 days. and the annual <br />evaporation averages 55 inches. <br /> <br />Big Sandy Creek drains an area approximately 343 square <br />miles above the study area.
