<br />. <br /> <br />train reported rain at the time of the flood but reports of a <br />large storm were not made from other areas in the subbasin. <br />Early settlers at Pueblo left no record of the flood so it is <br />believed that it originated farther downstream and was caused <br />primarily by rainfall or from spring runoff augmented by local <br />rain. <br /> <br />, <br />. <br /> <br />15. FLOOD OF 1864. The first dated flood on the Arkansas <br />River in Colorado was reported at Pueblo on June II, 1864. <br />Early settlers agreed that water from this flood reached Third <br />Street and Santa Fe Avenue in Pueblo which would indicate that <br />flooding approached that of the 1921 flood. The 1864 flood was <br />caused by heavy rains resulting from a general storm. Neither <br />the stage nor the discharge is known. <br /> <br />.1 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />16. FLOOD OF 1869. A flood in Kay or June of 1869 re- <br />quired the relocation of Fort Lyon. It was moved 17 miles to <br />the west. The rainfall at Fort Lyon during the last week in Kay <br />was 3.75 inches as compsred to an average of about 2 inches for <br />the entire month of May. The rainfall is believed to have <br />augmented spring runoff because streams in the vicinity of Canon <br />City were above normal for that time of year. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />17. FLOOD OF 1886. A large flood occurred in the valley <br />below the confluence of the Purgatoire River during the period <br />of July 20-25, 1886. This flood was produced by rainfall with <br />heavy amounts occurring in the vicinity of Las Animaa and La <br />Junta. At Las Animas there were 3.36 inches of rainfall on July <br />24 and 25. Water reportedly came down King Arroyo at La Junta <br />in a l2-foot wave. In Anderson Arroyo at La Junta, water was at <br />least 20 feet deep and overtopped the AT&SF Railroad bridge. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />18. <br />Mountain <br />$200,000 <br />indicate <br /> <br />FLOOD OF JUNE 26, 1893. According to the Rocky <br />Times, "Heavy rains at Pueblo broke the levee and did <br />damage." This was a very fast rising flood. Reports <br />that the river at Pueblo roae 8 feet in 2 hours. <br /> <br />19. FLOOD OF 1894. A atorm on Kay 29-31, 1894, caused a <br />severe flood on the Arkanaas River below Canon City. Flood- <br />waters originated primarily in the Fountain Creek watershed and <br />along the main stem of the Arkansas River from Salida to Pueblo. <br />A storm center was concentrated at Lake Moraine on Fountain <br />Creek. A lesser center occurred at Canon City. There was also <br />general rain over the watershed from Rocky Ford east. Recorded <br />precipitation for the storm was 5.06 ~nches at Canon City, 3.02 <br />inches at Pueblo, 3.50 inches at Rocky Ford, and 3.00 inches at <br />Lamar. On the Arkansss River above Pueblo, this flood reached a <br />higher stage than the 1921 flood and a serious flood resulted st <br />Pueblo where the peak was estimated at 39,000 c.f.s.
