Past Flood Hazard Mitigation Activities <br /> <br />Flood hazard mitigation activities can be undertaken before, during or after a flood event. <br />This plan focuses on pre-disaster flood hazard mitigation activities which, when implemented in <br />Floodville, will reduce future flood damages. First however, Floodville's past mitigation <br />activities will be described to demonstrate the community's ongoing commitment to the reduction <br />of flood damages whenever funding permits. Past and future mitigation activities will be <br />characterized into two broad categories: I - Non-structural flood hazard mitigation, 2 _ Structural <br />flood hazard mitigation. <br /> <br />Past Flood Hazard Mitigation Activities <br /> <br />Non-Structural <br /> <br />Structural <br /> <br />Flood insurance <br />Floodplain regulations <br />Acquisition and relocation <br />Open space policies <br /> <br />Levees <br />Channel improvements <br />Retrofitting of floodprone buildings <br /> <br />The CWCB encourages Colorado's floodprone communities to seek the implementation <br />of non-structural flood hazard mitigation activities wherever feasible. However, we realize that <br />many times structural activities are the only viable options a community may have because of <br />local circumstances. <br /> <br />A. Non-Structural Flood Hazard Mitigation in Floodville <br /> <br />Flood Insurance <br /> <br />There are three types of insurance one should investigate in order to reduce uninsured <br />losses from floods. <br /> <br />National Flood Insurance: This is a federally-subsidized program that is available to any <br />property owner in a participating community whether or not the structure is located in <br />an identified flood hazard area on a community's Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM). <br /> <br />2 <br />
