The river is now an excellent source of study both for the
casual observers and students of biology, and should remain so.

seeds occa-
si ona 11y eaten
by western
due ks

seeds eaten by
rodents and
birds; fonn
pure stands

important
food of ducks
and certain
marsh birds;
stems and
roots: musk-
rat

One will usually be able to observe most species from the surface of the
water, however one should not expect to see more than 20% on anyone trip
down the river.

Mamma 1 s
Although the list is based on actual sightings, all the mammals do not use
the river corridor for the same kind of habitat, nor do they inhabit all
the reaches between Chatfield Reservoir and Brighton. Some use the river
area during breeding season, some during non-breeding season. Some can be
found throughout the study area, others reside only in certain areas that
offer a specialized environment. These distinctions are not made in this
list.

nesting
cover for
waterfowl,
cover
for racoon,
muskrat

songbirds and deep taproot
rodents eat
seeds

spines can
hurt live-
stock and bi-
cycl e ti res

Verbascum thapsus bienni al sunny, often
(Conmon Mull ei n) forb on otherwise
ba rren soi 1
Vitis speci es perennial important
(Wil d Grape) cl imbi ng food for over
vine 100 sped es of
songbirds and
sma 11 manma 1 s;
foliage provides
dense cover
Xanthium species annual disturbed
(Cocklebur) forb soil s

More detaile~ information with regard to the habits and habitats of these
mammals can be obtained from the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

VIRGINIA OPOSSUM
MASKED SHREW
DUSKY SHREW
WATER SHREW
LEAST SHREW
SILVER-HAIRED BAT
BIG BROWN BAT
RED BAT
HOARY BAT
EASTERN COTTONTAIL
NUTTALL'S COTTONTAIL
DESERT COTTONTAIL
LEAST CHIPMUNK
YELLOW-BELLIED MARMOT
WYOMING GROUND SQUIRREL
THIRTEEN-LINED GROUND
SQUIRREL
ROCK SQUIRREL

FOX SQUIRREL
ORD'S KANGAROO RAT
BEAVER
DEER MOUSE
MEADOW VOLE
MONTANE VOLE
LONG-TAILED VOLE
PRAIRIE VOLE
MUSKRAT
NORWAY RAT
HOUSE MOUSE
COroTE
RED FOX
SWIFT FOX
GRAY FOX
BLACK-TAILED
PRAIRIE DOG
RACOON

LONG-TAILED WEASEL
NORTHERN POCKET GOPHER
PLAINS POCKET GOPHER
HISPID POCKET MOUSE
PLAINS HARVEST MOUSE
BUSHY-TAILED WOODRAT
MEADOW JUMPING MOUSE
SPOTTED SKUNK
STRIPED SKUNK
BOBCAT
WHITE-TAILED DEER
NORTHERN GRASSHOPPER
MOUSE
WESTERN HARVEST MOUSE
