X-2

Adams County is constructing high-quality recreational facilities by
innovative funding and implementation methods. Their existing and planned
facilities along the South Platte River are a nice rural complement to the
Denver Greenway. The Adams County Greenway currently includes a trail
system from Rendezvous Park, at the confluence of the South Platte River
and Clear Creek, to Steele Street Park. The Greenway features such
amenities as a graceful pedestrian bridge (the longest pre-fabricated
bridge in the state), trails, picnic areas, boat landings, overlooks and
native landscaping.

river boating and to provide an excellent experience for the intermediate
boater. There are parking areas, boat ramps, a slalom course, warning
signs and a continuous bikeway along the Denver portion of the river that
provides easy boating access.

Obstructi on

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reach Three: Oxford Avenue to Bates Avenue
No Obstructions
Reach Four: Bates Avenue to Colfax Avenue
#12 5' Rubble dam (PSCO)* Chute
#13 8' Rubbl e dam Chute
#14 2' Notched sheet pile dam Navigable
#15 2' Notched sheet pile dam Navigable
#16 4' Sheet pi 1 e dam Chute
#17 3' Notched sheet pile dam Navigable
#18 7' Concrete dam Navigable
#19 8' Infl atabl e dam Navigable
*Note : PSCO refers to the Pul:l ic Service Company.
Reach Five: Colfax Avenue to Cherry Creek
#20 1 1/2' Notched sheet pile dam Navigable
#21 Confluence Park kayak course Navi gab 1 e

Reach One:

RECREATION INVENTORY
The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Inventory maps at the end of this
Section outline existing and planned recreation facilities along the South
Platte River. The inventory maps graphically portray the existing
conditions at the beginning of the study. The recreation features mapped
include: existing and planned trails, existing parks, phYSical features,
views, boating obstructions, historical markers, wildlife habitat, active
fishing areas, view corridors and gravel mining operations.

#1
#2
#3
#4

Reach Two:

#5
#6
#7
#8
#9
#10
#11

The South Platte River through the Denver metropolitan area is a valuable
boating resource. It provides excellent opportunities for beginners and
experts to try their skills on pleasant flatwater or challenging
whitewater. The close proximity of the river to the region's large
population allows boaters to use the river for a day trip or a quick paddle
after work.

*Note :

Many types of river experiences can be found on the South Platte River.
These include natural channels with quiet pools and riffles in the south
area, a number of chutes and drops in the central area and slow-moving
placid waters in the north area's agricultural setting.

Beginners will find the south area (Chatfield Reservoir to Bowles Avenue)
and the north area (C-224 to Baseline Road) the most enjoyable. In both
areas, a few diversion dams exist that must be portaged. In the central
area (Bowles Avenue to C0224) the river has a higher gradient, a narrower
channel and several drop structures consisting of check dams, diversions
and utility crossings. Many of the drops have been modified to accomodate

TABLE X-I
BOATING OBSTRUCTION
Type

Possible Solutions

Chatfield Reservoir to Columbine Valley

I' Concrete wei r
Rubb 1 e dam
3' Concrete & rubble dam
(Sewer crossing)
6" Concrete weir

Not in boating limits
Chute
Chute

Navigable

Columbine Valley to Oxford Avenue

8' Columbine dam & proposed
Brown Ditch diversion
Abandoned 12" pipe
l' Sheet pile dike
Concrete sewer crossing
Abandoned 36" sewer crossing
10' Dam
6' Gabion dam

Chute
To be removed (USACE)*
To be removed (USACE)*
Navigable
To be removed (USACE)*
Chute
To be removed (USACE)*

USACE refers to the United States Army Corps of Engineers
