V II 1-8

Sand Creek to Brighton
tletween Sand Creek and Brantner the erOSlon of the South Platte River bed
has resulted in a lowering of the bed by approximately 2 to 4 feet.

(L.. .'LT

-<

The drop at 88th Avenue bridge has caused aggradation at the bridge of about
3 to 4 feet, but downstream of 88th Avenue to the Fulton Dam, there has been
practically no change in the bed elevation. The City of Thornton water
supply gravel pits are in a reach of the South Platte River where the river
bed elevation is virtually the same in 1983 as it was in 1963. Bed erosion
would have endangered the steep banks at the Thornton site.

'00

..

.
w
z ..
.
~
z
w
u e
.
w
.

..

Between the Fulton Dam and the Brantner Dam the bed of the South Platte
River has generally eroded. The maximum erosion has occurred immediately
downstream of the Fulton Dam where the erosion reaches 4 feet. The 1 1/2
mile reach upstream of the Brantner Dam has been an area of aggradat ion.
Downstream of the Brantner Dam to Henderson Island the river bed elevation
has not significantly changed between 1963 and 1983.

.
....

."

'00

..

CHERRY CREEK

.
w
z
~
~ ..
z
w
u
.
w
. ..

From Henderson Island to Baseline Road, the South Platte River has eroded by
about 2 feet on the average, with a maximum of 4 feet at Brighton.

..

Generally, the erosion of the South Platte River has been accompanied by
serious river bank erosion problems between Sand Creek and Brighton.

.
0.00.

0.01

".

Chatfield Reservoir to Brighton
Between 1963 and 1983 the South Platte River has eroded its bed downward a
maximum of 6 feet while aggrading in some other places. Several other areas
have been downcut 4 feet. In nearly the whole 40 mile reach of the river,
degradation has occurred which overall is estimated at an average of 2 feet.
Aggradation has been experienced upstream from new or raised drop structures
in the 1963 to 1983 period. The downcutting has been associated with river
bank caving and erosion. Resulting damages tend to fall on the public agen-
cies, including Add"''' County, State Highway Department, sanitation dis-
tricts, and Littleton.

O' I.

>>.

'"

aRAI..
