The Cherokee Plant also obtains cooling
water from Clear Creek at an approximate average rate of diversion of
1.9 cfs (1,366 AF/year), but the primary source of cooling water for the
Cherokee Plant is the Farmers and Gardeners Ditch with an approximate
average rate of diversion to the plant ranging from 6 to 9 cfs or more.
The Public Service Company estimates the average rate of consumptive use
of water at the Cherokee Plant to be about 64 percent.

O'Brian Ditch

1,892

Denver-Hudson Canal

1,879

Barr Lake

902
1,943

Horse Creek Res.

2,050
2,608
2,608

9. Burlington Ditch, O'Brian Canal, Denver-Hudson Canal
This ditch and reservoir system is the largest single diversion from the
South Platte River between Chatfield Reservoir and Brighton. The water
rights decreed to the various parts of the system are listed below. The
common point of diversion for all of these water rights is the headgate
of the Burlington Ditch on the right bank of the South Platte River
about one mile north of the Interstate 70 bridge. Treated effluent from
the Denver Metro Sewage Treatment Plant can be pumped into the Burling-
ton Ditch to supplement the available flows in the South Platte River at
the Burlington Ditch headgate whenever any of these rights are in prior-
ity but unable to divert their full amounts, due to a shortage of water
in the river.

Prospect Reservoir

2,040
2,608

Amount

3.0 cfs
27.4 cfs

350.0 cfs
380.4 cfs

600.0 cfs

300.0 cfs

11,081 AF
21,930 AF
33,011 AF

12,000 AF
4,965 AF
2,550 AF
19,515 AF

5,97D AF
1,690 AF
7,660 AF

Appropri at i on
Date
06/02/1862
04/01/1864

11/20/1885

03/09/1908

11/28/1907

11/20/1885
01/13/190lJ

03/17/1911
07/20/1922
07/20/1922

11/21/1910
07/20/1922

V-7

Adjud i cat i on
Date
08/14/1918
04/28/1883

07/08/1893

08/02/1918

08/02/1918

D7/08/1893
08/02/1918

08/02/1918
11/12/1924
11/12/1924

08/02/1918
11/12/1924

10. Gardeners Ditch
The Gardeners Ditch diverts water at a point on the left bank of the
South Platte River just south of the 58th Avenue bridge to irrigate
lands between the ditch headgate and the mouth of Clear Creek. Although
the water right in the Gardeners Ditch is quite senior and is situated
upstream from the Denver Metro Sewage Treatment Plant point of return,
the right would be in use only during the irrigation season and the
amount of the right is too small to playa significant role in low-flow
maintenance on the river.
