IV-2

capacity. In addition, the Farmers and Gardeners diversion dam causes a
rise in the 100-year water surface elevation.

500 feet to 1,500 feet wide. Flood de~Lhs on the st("uctures flooded are up
to 2 1/2 feet. In addition to the structures and streets that would be
flooded there are railroads which would receive damage from flooding.

There are approximately 30 acres on the left bank of the South Platte River
from Colfax to 1-25 flooded during the 100-year flood. Water leaves the
channel between Colfax and Interstate 25. The floodplain in this area is up
to 1,000 feet wide and it includes parking lots for McNichols Arena, of-
fices, some abandoned buildings, and warehouses. Altogether, about 10
structures are affected by flood depths up to 2 feet. In addition to roads
there are railroads in this area which would be affected by floods.

On the right bank between 8th Avenue and Colfax there is an area west of
Interstate 25 which is flooded by the 100-year flood. There are about a
dozen structures including welding supply stores, retail stores, a motel and
open storage areas in this area. The area is about 30 acres, and is
approximately 500 feet wide. Flood depths in this area are about 2 feet.
Water also floods an area east of Interstate 25 in this reach which includes
about 40 acres and 25 structures. Structures in this area are mostly ware-
houses, offices, machine shops, and railroad yards. The depths of flooding
range up to 4 feet deep. Water enters this area by flowing underneath the
Interstate 25 emban kment at 13th Avenue and at the railroad underpass down-
stream of 13th Avenue.

The 13th and 14th Avenue bridges and the Public Service Company collapsible
dam (when collapsed) do not individually cause flooding, but these struc-
tures are collectively part of the inadequate channel capacity problem in
this reach.

In this same reach water which has left the channel at 13th Avenue and at
the I-25/Colfax Avenue interchange is flowing east of the interstate embank-
ment in a hydraulically separate channel. This water joins overflow from
the South Platte below Interstate 25 and flows to Speer Boulevard. This
area includes about 20 structures which are flooded to depths of 1 to 2
feet. These structures include fabricating shops, offices, warehouses, and
railroad tracks. This area is one of the main switching yards for the
Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and the Burlington Northern Railroad and it
includes about 180 acres.

8th Avenue
On the right bank upstream of the 8th Avenue bridge a small low spot in the
river bank at the Frog Hollow parking lot allows water to leave the South
Pl atte channel, flow down 8th Avenue and flood an area on the east side of
Interstate 25. Flooding in this area would generally be shallow. There are
about 20 structures in this area which includes about 20 acres. These
structures consist mostly of lumber yards, warehouses, offices, and small
machine shops.

On the left bank of the river from 7th Street to Speer Boulevard there is a
private redevelopment program where structures have been removed in early
1984.

Flooding in this reach is caused by the generally low banks, a sewer cross-
ing, low elevation of the ground next to the river, and inadequate channel

REACH 6: CHERRY CREEK TO FRANKLIN
The 100-year flood is contained within the channel from Cherry Creek to
Interstate 70. The Franklin Street Bridge at the downstream end of this
reach is overtopped in the laO-year flood. This bridge along with an adja-
cent railroad bridge cause a 1 to 2 foot rise in the 100-year flood water
surface elevation. This rise, coupled with the low banks in several places
along this reach causes flooding along the left bank. The floodplain covers
about 300 acres with shallow flooding about 2,400 feet wide. The upstream
portion of this flooded area is primarily single family residences. There
are about 150 houses in this area, but only about one third of them receive
flooding. In addition, there are 25 or so businesses, mostly located along

REACH 5: COLFAX TO CHERRY CREEK
