III-8

The 3rd Avenue dam was given special attention because a boat chute was add-
ed this year. This boat chute significantly increased the capacity of the
dam to pass flood flows. Calculations of the flow of the dam were done in
order to establish a rating curve to be used in the HEC-2 model. Flow was
calculated over the section of the existing dam which will remain in place,
over the boat chute recently constructed and over the spillway connecting
the two. The rating curve was established at a section about 200 feet up-
stream of the boat chute beyond the acceleration effect of the dam. The
energy grade line was calculated at that point and at the crest of the exis-
ting dam, the boat chute, and the side channel spillway. Using these calcu-
lations, the flow split between the three overflow sections was determined.
Calculations of low flow water surface elevations were obtained from
McLaughlin Water Engineers, the designers of the boat chute.

Avenue dam, drop structures at Sante Fe and Mississippi Avenues, the drop
structure downstream of Florida Avenue and the dam upstream of Florida Ave-
nue used to divert water by the Denver Parks Department. The Public Service
Company danl uownstrearn of 13th Street is an inflatable dam. The dam would
be in its collapsed position in time of flood. The collapsed elevation of
the dam was assumed to be 1 foot above the concrete facility upon which the
dam rests.

1. DENVER
Clear Ck..__'''..
