XII-8

that the problems associated with the large floodplain lakes could not be
adequately addressed within the existing scope of this projecta

Combinations
The combination alternative includes consideration and use of various com-
binations of the above alternatives to provide the best level of protection
at the least cost. The recommended alternative for each of the reaches will
be a combination of the above alternatives. For example, all alternatives
include consideration of floodplain regulation. Certain elements of the
other alternatives have been included in the limited structural improvements
alternative. In various reaches the limited structural improvement alterna-
tive includes lined channels and modified channel relocation.

This alternative for Reach 8 involved a combination of an engineered stable
channel and large gravel pit lakes. These lakes would be constructed across
the entire floodplain and would be approximately 1 mile long. No embankment
construction is associated with the lakes, however, the cost estimates would
include measures to insure the long-term stability against failure. In this
alternative, three subalternatives are studied; the la-year, 50-year and
100-year events. It differs from the "1 arge fl oodpl ain 1 akes" alternative
in that major dams designed to high hazard standards would not be included.
Between these large floodplain lakes, the engineered channel would convey
flows. The channel would be designed to the same criteria as in the engin-
eered stable channel alone.
