<br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />Drainage areas ,for the major tributaries to the Blue River <br />in the Breckenridge area are shown in Table 1. <br /> <br />- 3 - <br /> <br />All the tributary basins draining into the Blue River <br />from the Ten Hile Range on the west above the town have been <br />glaciated, whereas the tributaries draining into the Blue <br />River from the east Lave not. As a result of the different <br /> <br />geologic origins, the: tributaries on either side of the Blue <br />River have different hydrologic properties. Sub-basins that <br />o,vc.. <br />have been glaciated have soils developed on glacial material; <br />'~ <br />These soils are generally €oarse textu~~and may vary from a <br />very stony or rocky clay 'to a very coarse textured gravel with <br />boulders and cobble. I~filtration rates and losses for this <br />C'l"l::e t:,^~tdt-,I...,l"i""'I.V <br />type of parent material_can~be=high. In the non-glaciated <br />basins east of the Blue River, the soils have been developed on <br />very hard and dense iqneous and metamorphic rocks. Infiltration <br />rates and losses_of_soil~or debris developed on the igneous <br />rocks may b~elativelY 10~ Whereas, the basins located east <br />- - <br />and west of the Blue River may be either glaciated or non- <br />glaciated, the valley of the Blue River has been glaciated. <br />As a result, land located within a half mile to one mile on <br />either side of the river is covered~y 9Ia~;al material~ <br />Consequently, infiltration rates and-losses~ayb'e exception- <br />,=-, <br />ally high. <br />----- <br />The drainage basins on either side of the Blue River below <br />the town of Breckenridge differ markedly from those above the <br />town. Geologic conditions are different in that the parent <br />materials for soils are sedimentary rocks or alluvial fans. <br />Hy~logic properties of soils developed on these materials <br />~Je different than those developed on parent materials <br />located above the town of Breckenridge. Infiltration rates <br />and losses of the soils developed on sedimentary rocks-may be <br />relatively low whereas infiltration rates an~~s~ df~ilS <br />developed in the alluvial fans may be moderate to high.
