It is surrounded <br /> <br />by mountain ranges varying in elevation from 12,000 to 14,000 feet H.S.L. <br /> <br />The Tarryall Mountains from the northeast boundary of the South Park area. <br /> <br />Elevations in the Plains region vary from approximately 7,000 feet M.S.L. <br /> <br />along the foothills to approximately 3,920 feet M.S.L. at Sterling. <br />Climate in the basin is semi-arid varying with the topography. In <br />general, warm summers and mild to cold winters prevail. Intense thunder- <br /> <br />storms, sometimes of cloudburst intensity, can occur during summer months. <br /> <br />For Sterling's climate: mean annual precipitation is 14.96 inches; J,UY <br /> <br />mean temperature is 73.50 F.; and January mean temperature is 24.70 F. <br /> <br /> <br />The South Platte River in the Sterling vicinity flows in a general <br /> <br /> <br />northeasterly direction. It has a relatively well-defined channel <br /> <br /> <br />located within a braid pattern having an approximate overall width of <br /> <br />2,000 feet. The valley of the South Platte River in the Sterling area <br />is broad and shallow, ranging from 8,500 to 17,000 feet in width. It <br />is flanked by rolling plains. Thoughout the study reach, the main channel <br /> <br /> <br />width averages 450 feet in width. The main channel depth averages 5.5 feet. <br /> <br /> <br />The streambed has a relatively uniform slope approximating 7 feet per <br /> <br /> <br />mile. <br /> <br />Pawnee Creek <br /> <br />Pawnee Creek drains an area of about 703 sQuare miles upstream from <br /> <br />its confluence with the South Platte River located about 5 miles southwest <br /> <br />of Sterling. It has a well-defined channel having a width of abmlt 80 feet <br /> <br /> <br />and a depth of about 8 feet upstream from United States Highway 6. It is <br /> <br /> <br />an alluvial stream flowing through a broad, shallow valley about one mile <br /> <br /> <br />in width near its confluence with the South Platte River. Although Pawnee <br /> <br />Creek is located about 5 miles southwest from Sterling, Pawnee Creek flood <br /> <br />waters can flow in an easterly direction towards Sterling. <br />
