page 43

VOLUNTEEH LAUDED
Sheriff I s officers and postle police, civil defense,
Red Cross personnel and volunteers coordinated efforts to
prevent personal tragedies, Getz said.
Red Cross personnel, alerted by ~~s. S. L. Fredregill,
gave aid to families taken to Long-Berg Hall. They provided
sheets and pillow cases, coffee and doughnuts.
Posse members, equipped with two-way radios, 4-wheel
drive vehicles and a boat, help evacuate families on Franklin
and Cleveland street and No. 7th Ave.
They went in relays to trouble spots in Charmony and
Whitcomb addition where sandbagging operations continued
thru much of the night.
Roy Cullip, operator of an ambulance service, used his
ambulance to help evacuate people.
CROP DAMAGE
County agent Jim Read said it has not been possible to
assess crop damage.
"Irrigated crops around Sterling were damaged, but crops
not flooded will benefit," Read said.
"Standing water will hurt, but we don't know to what
extent," Read said. "There was a lot of silt.
Read, who lives two miles north of Sterling on Sidney
Avenue, evacuated his home last night. His family moved
into a motel.
The Troy Greenwood home nearby had a foot of water,
Read said.
"The water came in fast when the ditches broke," Read
said.
4 FEET DEEP
Mike Kerker told the J -A water was 4 feet deep at the
Shell warehouse west of Sterling this morning. He said it
had dropped only 2 inches by 11:30 a.m.
Littler said ther is no danger of' river floods from
yesterday's rain.
Prewitt reservoir is low and will take water from the
South Platte River if it rises.
Jake Artzer reported about 3 inches of rain between
Stoneham and New Raymer and said water was flowing in
Pawnee Creek.
However, Littler checked Pawnee and highway 14 this
morning and found only a trickle.
NUMEROUS OUTAGES
Public Service Company reported numerous outages in
Sterling, Peetz, Willard and Stoneham.
"Our biggest problem was inability to reach trouble
spots," Ken Levengood, PSC manager here said.
Outages were reported at the Joe Oliverius farm and a
neighbor east of Peetz. PSC crews finally reached them this
morning.
Several outages in the Willard-Stoneham area were repaired
after crews got to them at 11 p.m.
There were many outages in north Sterling, with lightning
blamed for most of them.
