<br />page 37 <br /> <br />l'rom THE STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE on June 15, 1965.... <br /> <br />F L 0 0 D <br /> <br />WATERS <br /> <br />ENDANGER <br /> <br />ATWOOD <br /> <br />BRIDGE, <br /> <br />H 0 M E S <br /> <br />Flood waters of the Pawnee Creek slammed into the highway <br />6 bridge near Atwood at noon today. <br />Water churned in all directions. <br />Atwood was flooded and homes were evacuated. <br />A helicopter operated by Jack Weisbart of Brush was <br />pressed into service to rescue persons who were stranded in <br />Atwood by the rapidly rising waters. <br />A body of water turned toward Sterling. It was still <br />about 2'--. miles from Sterling at 1:30 ;.m. <br />Spectators lining the highway were waiting ;rhen the water <br /> <br />hit. <br /> <br />The water poured into a farm south of the bridge on its <br />way to the Platte river. <br />A railroad bridge near the highway bridge was threatened <br />by the rising waters. <br />Workers labored feverishly to keep debris from damming <br />up the railroad bridge. <br />By 12:30 water was beginning to cross highway <br />the bridge. Water moved so rapidly a photographer <br />trouble getting back to his car parked on the side <br />highway. <br />Shortly thereafter the Highway Patrol closed. the highway. <br />Obseryers predicted the flood might reach the outskirts <br />of Sterling. <br />All morning farmers in the area had been mak.ing preparations <br />for the flood -- possibly the worst Pawnee Creek outburst <br />of this century. <br />The speed of the rushing waters <br />It hit the bridge on highway 14 <br />warning.
