Sonnenberg
was able to learn that Mr. Held had escaped from the water.
Reports received by Water Commissioner Pat Marsh and
others indicated the probability of new flood waters from
Bijou, Wildcat and Kiowa creeks into the South Platte. These
floods, however, had not materialized today, and the runoff
from Pawnee creek may be completed before further floods
arrive, it was expected.
The South Platte was today flowing an estilnat'ed 10,000
second feet of water under the river bridge at Sterling.
Persons familiar with the river and its rate of flow said
that, while the islands were practically covered, the river
would carry several times the present volume of water and
remain within its banks.
Flood waters which ran down upon the outlet of Riverside
reservoir in the Fort Morgan district ca.used that ditch to
break in several places, as the North Sterling broke Sunday,
and with comparable results. The incident gave rise to a
report that one of the Morgan county reservoirs had washed
out. This and many other wild rumors circulated about Sterling
and allover Colorado today.
Three men were marooned on a Safeway truck which stalled
in the flood water between Atwood and the Pawnee creek crossing
Monday. Railroad section workers built a raft of ties, paddled
it with their hands to the truck and took off the men who had
clilnbed to the top of the vehicle. Drivers of the truck
were Mert Jordan and William Neal, both of Denver. The
machine carried groceries and other supplies from the Western
States Grocery wholesale house for five stores in this region.
It stalled when the drivers attempted to push a sma.ller vehicle
in distress, and flooded the engine.
Additional rainfall of 1. 09 inches fell Monda)r night at
Sterling. There was a great downpour in the region west of
Sterling, apparently as far as Cheyenne.
Equipment, including a quantity of county roail construction
machinery, is being assembled for repair work on the broken
North Sterling intake ditch.

From THE STERLING ADVOCATE on Wednesday, May 29, 1935....

FLOOD CRIES!
FALLS,; TRAIN:S
NOW RUNIN'[INIG

Sterling-Atwood Pavement Probably Will Be Open by Thursday
Morning; Damage Can Not Yet Be Calculated

The Sterling-Atwood region today was emerging from Severe
flood conditions of four days, with train service restored and
