<br />5 <br /> <br /> <br />Prepare for the Next Flood <br /> <br />p <br /> <br />50 <br /> <br />have a therapeutic effect, sand- <br />bagging should be considered <br />only as part of an overall flood <br />response plan, or as a last resort <br />for individuals. <br />A good plan will help use <br />your limited time and resources <br />most efficiently. For example, a <br />flood response plan might call <br />for sandbags to fill in gaps in a <br />f1oodwall. <br />Sandbagging is supposed to <br />keep water away from vutnera- <br />ble flood-prone property. Taking <br />f1oodproofing measures and <br />moving contents out of the way <br />are much more secure methods <br />to accomplish the same thing. <br />Therefore, before you consider <br />sandbagging for your personal <br />property, consider the flood pro- <br />tection alternatives discussed in <br />Step 8. They are more effective <br />and more dependable ways to <br />protect a house from flooding. <br /> <br />Sources of Informa"on <br />The following people can pro- <br />vide advice or assistance on <br />flood recovery. Some of these <br />people may be able to speak to <br />neighborhood groups or help in <br />developing a community flood <br />protection program. <br /> <br />Flood Preparedness and Safety <br />The American Red Cross and <br />local emergency managers con- <br />duct sessions to increase public <br />awareness and to educate the <br />community in ways to prevent, <br />prepare for, and cope with <br />emergencies. Local emergency <br />managers also sponsor public <br />meetings on damage reduction, <br />safety, response planning, how <br />to handle stress, and other <br /> <br />flood-related topics. <br />The following publications <br />are available from the American <br />Red Cross.
