The flooding sources studied in detail are Big Dry Creek, Little Dry
Creek, Goldsmith Gulch, West Tributary to Goldsmith Gulch, Greenwood
Gulch, and Prentice Gulch. The areas studied in detail were chosen
with consideration given to all forecasted development and construc-
tion through 1981, No streams within the city of Greenwood Village
were studied by approximate methods.

2.2 Community Description

The City of Greenwood Village is located in western Arapahoe County,
in central Colorado, south of the City of Denver, At the time it
was incorporated in 1950, Greenwood Village had an area of 3 square
miles that was used primarily for residential and agricultural
purposes. In 1968, the city essentially doubled in size by annex-
ation eastward to Dayton street and now consists of approximately 6
square miles. The communities adjacent to the City of Greenwood
village are the City of Cherry Hills Village and the City of Denver
to the north, the City of Littleton to the west, and unincorporated
areas of Arapahoe County to the west, south, and east.

The climate of the area is considered pleasant with an annual mean
temperature of 50.20F. The average annual rainfall is 14 inches
with 45,6 inches of snowfall,

The stream basins are narrow, hydraulically steep, and composed of
highly erodible, clay-loam soils, In undeveloped portions of the
basins, the ground cover is predominantly a short grass called
buffalo grass. As there are only four residential structures loca-
ted within the lOa-year flood boundary, the flood plain can be
considered basically undeveloped.

2.3 Principal Flood Problems

Runoff as a result of high intensity thunderstorms is the primary
cause of flooding in the City of Greenwood Village, The rain falls
mainly in the plains and is most frequently experienced during the
months of May through September, Flood plain development within the
corporate limits of Greenwood Village has been minor in comparison
to communities further downstream. Therefore, floods on the stream
within the study limits have never caused enough damage to warrant
news coverage or recorded information within the community. During
flood stages, considerable damage is caused downstream in the com-
munities of Englewood and Denver where flood plains are more devel-
oped.

The maximum flood of record on Little Dry Creek occurred on
September 10, 1933, with an estimated discharge of 10,000 cubic feet
per second (cfs) near the mouth (Reference 1),

Since the construction of the Englewood Dam, minor flooding has
occurred on Little Dry Creek on August 5, 1945; August 2 and 3, 1951;

3
