<br />In addition, portions of the following streams were studied by <br />approximate methods, due to lack of significant development in <br />a <br /> <br />Eagle Creek <br />Grouse Creek <br />Gypsum Creek <br />Beaver Creek <br />West Lake Creek <br />East Lake Creek <br />Two Elk Creek <br /> <br />Deep Creek <br />Squaw Creek <br />McCoy Creek <br />Sweetwater Creek <br />Stone Creek <br />Whiskey Creek <br />Colorado River <br /> <br />Also, following a detailed analysis of the flood plains on Downey <br />Creek, Seven Castles Creek, Otto Creek, and Frenchman Creek, it was <br />determined that these streams would be approximate study areas <br />because of narrow flood plains, averaging from 15 to 20 feet in <br />width. <br /> <br />Those areas studied by detailed methods were chosen with consider- <br />ation given to all proposed construction and forecasted development <br />through 1984. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />Eagle County, which is almost entirely rural, is located in west- <br />central Colorado. It has an area of 1686 square miles. Eagle <br />County is bordered by the Gore Range and Summit County on the east, <br />Garfield County on the west, Routt "nd Grand Counties on the <br />north, and Pitkin and Lake Cormties en the south. The terrain is <br />mostly mountainous, with loroad valLE)ys along Eagle River. Eleva- <br />tions range from 6150 feet in the Colorado River Valley to over <br />13,000 feet on some mountain peaks (Reference 1). In the western <br />part of the county, the economy is mainly agricultural, with farming <br />and ranching being the dominant land uses. In eastern Eagle County, <br />mining, especially along the Eagle River at the Town of Gillman, <br />and recreation-related activities in the Town of Vail area are the <br />major-'sources of- income..__ <br /> <br />The population of Eagle County grew 60 percent from 1960 to 1970. <br />In 1960, the population was 4677; by 1970, it had increased to 7498 <br />(Reference 2). The population now numbers 10,257 (Reference 2). <br />This growth is largely due to the recreational boom at the Town of <br />Vail. <br /> <br />Mean winter temperatures in upper portions of the basins range from <br />310F to 30F and summer temperatures range from 740F to 350F. At <br />lower elevations, such as the Town of Eagle (6500 feet), the winter <br />variation is from 350P to 30Ft and summer temperatures range from <br />850F to 440F (Reference 3). <br /> <br />4 <br />
