The NFIP produces two types of maps:

o Flood Hazard Boundary Map (FHBM)--initial flood hazard identification generally
used for Emergency Program communities, and

o Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM)--generally used for Regular Program
communities. Some Regular Program communities may use a map originally
published as an FHBM; however, a letter will accompany the map in conjunction
with conversion to the Regular Program stating that the map is to be considered a
FIRM.

Countywide FIRM--official source of flood risk data for several communities that
supersedes all previous versions of the FEMA flood hazard maps for the
communities it covers. Countywide FIRMs show flooding information for the entire
geographic area of a county including the incorporated communities within the
county.

Key elements specific to a Countywide FIRM are as follows:

Map Number - Because more than one community is covered, the Map Number
is composed of a two-digit state code; a three-digit county code; the letter "C"
to indicate the FIRM is in the countywide format; and four zeros.

Effective Date - Date on which the Countywide FIRM first became effective.

listing of Communities - All communities covered by the FIRM, their NFIP
identification numbers, panel or panels on which each community is shown, the
initial Identification Date (date on which the flood hazards were first identified),
and Post-FIRM Date for each community (effective date of first FIRM for that
community).

Community Name - The words "And Incorporated Areas" appear as part of the
community name indicating that the entire geographic area of the county is
covered including the incorporated communities.

2. The maps may have one panel or multiple panels. Most Z-fold maps have multiple
panels. However, flat maps generally consist of only one panel.

3. For multiple panel maps, individual panels are identified on a community map index.

October 1992

MAP 1
