The sky spawned the rains
that brought death and des-
trucllon to the Big Thomp-
son Canyon - butlrom that
. same sky came relief. Heli-
copters churned through
murky clouds delivering
lood and supplies and then
returned 10 dry land with
the Injured and the bewil-
dered.

"The thunderstorms were reforming
upstream and moving over the basin;
after the first one hit, several others
followed shortly thereafter," Grace
noted. The heaviest rains of 11 y,
inches-what we could actually verify-
fell in the canyon below Estes Park."
As the search continued for more
victims of the flooding, the controversy
surrounding the balky readout at Limon
droned on.
Grace confirmed that no flash flood
warning was issued for the area ".. .until

22

floods had already occurred in the
canyon. Our first flash flood warning
then was for the lower part of the river
from Loveland on down to Greeley."
The initial statement issued by the
NWS came at 7:35 p.m. on July 31, in
the form of a severe thunderstorm
warning.
"We had attached to that warning a
statement that some flooding could be
expected in low-lying areas. This was
based principally on radar. We did not
have out a flash flood warning."
