<br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study <br />Montezuma County, Colorado. <br />Vicinity Map (Figure 1). <br /> <br />covers the unincorporated areas of <br />The areas of study are shown on the <br /> <br />The areas studied by detailed methods <br />the extent and val idi ty of avai lable <br />hydraulic data. <br /> <br />were selected based upon <br />existing hydrologic and <br /> <br />The following streams were studied by detailed methods throughout <br />the county: <br /> <br />Dolores River was studied from approximately 1,725 feet <br />downstream of 1st Street extended upstream to a point <br />approximately 14,300 feet upstream of Four Corners Bridge, a <br />reach of approximately 8 miles. <br /> <br />West Dolores River was studied from approximately 585 feet <br />downstream of State Route 145 to a point approximately 2,975 <br />feet upstream of State Route 145, a reach of approximately 0.7 <br />mile. <br /> <br />Mancos River was studied from a point approximately 3,480 feet <br />downstream of Spruce Street upstream to a point approximately <br />1,830 feet upstream of Crand Avenue, a reach of approximately <br />1.7 miles. <br /> <br />Lost Canyon Creek was studied from approximately 2,240 feet <br />downstream of County Road 30 upstream to a point approximately <br />4,100 feet upstream of that same highway, a reach of approxi- <br />mately 1.2 miles. <br /> <br />Chicken Creek was studied from U.S. Highway 160 to a point <br />approximately 230 feet upstream of Walnut Street extended. <br /> <br />The unincorporated areas within the study reaches were studied <br />exclusively. <br /> <br />Approximate methods of analysis were used to study all the <br />remaInIng areas having a potential flood hazard that did not have <br />available detailed scientific or technical data. <br /> <br />The incorporated cities of Cortez and Dolores, and the Town of <br />Mancos are not included in this Flood Insurance Study. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />Montezuma County is located in southwestern Colorado, bordered by <br />San Juan County, Utah, to the west; the Ute Mountain Indian <br />Reservation and San Juan County to the south; La Plata County, <br /> <br />2 <br />
