Results show that snow melt is

not a contributing factor to runoff frequencies of ten-year or greater, the primary

concern of this study. This implies that significant runoff is coming from rainfall

events. As a consequence, only rainfall generated runoff is considered in developing

peak discharge-frequency values included herein.

Frequency Analysis -- Initially, frequency discharges for Four-Mile Creek

were determined by the Log Pearson Type III frequency analysis (Bulletin 17B) of the

USGS stream gauge data (the gauge is located on Four-Mile Creek, 3,100 feet from

the Arkansas River), but the results were inadequate because the data record of the

Four-Mile watershed did not include sufficient historical peaks. Further research in

the archives of the Canon City Historical Society in an attempt to recover the missing

records did not yield any results.

1. Four-Mile Creeks Hydrology- Frequency discharges were computed by regional

analysis of seven stream gauges in the Arkansas River basin and four in the Platte

Ri\u basin. These gauged stations have 20 or more years of reliable data and record

peak flows, unaffected by regulation or diversion (with some exception on Four-Mile

Creek's gauge). Omitted from the study were gauges at elevations above 8,000 feet

or below 4,000 feet, urban gauges, gauges \lith upstream regulation, gauges lIith

less than 20 years of record, and gauges located on streams \\1th topographic

features markedly dissimilar to those ofthe Four-Mile watershed.

Table 1 shows the seven selected gauges from the Arkansas River basin and

the four selected gauges from the Platte River basin, as well as the drainage area of

each gauged basin and the number of years ofrecorded annual peak data.
