On June 17, 1965 the Arkansas River peaked at an estimated 200,000 c.rs. at <br />Holly. <br /> <br />Related Reports and Information <br /> <br />A number of reports regarding the Arkansas River and its tributaries have been published. <br />Reports relevant to the flood control project at Las Animas area are listed in this secti.on. <br /> <br />The Corps published an Interim Report on Review Survey for Flood Control, Arkansas <br />River and Tributaries, Las Animas, Colorado, and Vicinity, dated August 1963. This report <br />comprised the results of an investigation of flooding Emd allied problems in the vicinity of Las <br />Animas. This report included information on the St,mdard Project Flood! and the Project Design <br />Flood (PDF) for a proposed flood control project at Las Animas. <br /> <br />The Corps prepared a Design Memorandum No. I, Hydrology, for the Las Animas Local <br />Protection Project, Las Anima~, Colorado, dated September 1967. This report presented basic <br />hydrologic information to be used in the development of the definite project pi.an for the Las <br />Animas Local Protection Project. <br /> <br />The Corps prepared a Design Memorandum No.2, General, for the Las Animas Local <br />Protection Project, Las Animas, Colorado, dated August 22, 1968. This report presented detailed <br />design information for all features of the Las Animas Local Protection Proj ec:t other than <br />hydrology. <br /> <br />The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) prepared ancl published <br />on December 28, 1973, an approximate floodplain map (Flood Hazard Boundary Map) for the <br />City of Las Animas. This map showed a significant portion of the City as being in the 100-year <br />floodplain and subject to the risk of flooding. <br /> <br />Hydro Engineering Consulting Water Engineers, Pueblo, Colorado, prepared a Flood <br />Hazard Study, City of Las Animas, Colorado, dated May 1975. The study and other information <br />including copies of a Soil Conservation Service Filoodplain and Geologic Hazard Map, dated <br />January 1971, and a US Geological Survey map showing Flood Prone areas was transmitted to <br />the Board by letter of May 11,1976, from the Land Use Administrator, Bent COlmty. The Land <br />Use Administrator requested approval of SCS Floodplain Map for Las Animas. The Board <br />denied the request by letter of May 21,1976, on the basis that the information did not meet the <br />Boards standards. <br /> <br />IThe Standard Project Flood (SPF) and the Project Design Flood (PDF) are U.S. Army Corps <br />of Engineers nomenclature. The Corps defines the SPF as a flood that would be exceeded only <br />on rare occasions and in many instances defines 1he upper limit against which protection is <br />sought. The Project Design Flood is the flood used to design the levees and may be less than <br />the SPF. <br /> <br />3 <br />
