The storm began on Saturday afternoon and started with la.rge hailstones and wind that broke out a
number of windows and damaged crops, Witnesses said that the stonn continued into the evening
with intense rains following the initial hailstorm, The CWCB staff did not gather data for
estimating a peak streamflow due to the localized drainage probkm and ditch overflow (non-
riverine flooding) in Crook. However, post-flood photographs were taken (see appendix) and
rainfall estimates for the storm were obtained and are presented in the following table,

Rainstorm of July 25, 1998
Crook, Colorado

I Information Source Rainfall AmouniT
Howard Hamilton 4,8"
(official NWS weather observer
for Crook)
Crook Postmaster 4,5"
Crook Homeowner 5,5" --,
,--~

Duration
3 hours or iess (stann total)'

Max, I houf(not storm tot~--
~l h.?ur~ or lesS(StormtOta~'-

The community of Fleming, located in extreme eastern Logan County not far from Phillips County,
was contacted to inquire about recent flooding problems, Fleming received a minor rainstorm on
July 20th with no reported flood damage or flood problems, The postal clerk mentioned that the St.
Peters area received several inches of rain on July 20th, with minor stre.m1 flooding reported,

Sedgwick County
The town of Sedgwick, located in northwestern Sedgwick County about 5 miles south of the
Colorado-Nebraska state line, experienced an intense rainstOllli on July 27, A very hard rain was
rep0l1ed to have happened between 5pm and 7:30pm, with much lighter rains continuing until about
9:30pm, Flooding in houses and businesses was minimal, but street flooding was a problem during
and after the storm, The postal clerk said that the official weather observer (Trent Smith, located 2
blocks north of the Post Office) and one other weather observer recorded 4.5" to 5,5" of rain for the
,torm total.
