I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

1

I SUMMARY

The Study Area

The Lakewood Gulch watershed consists of approximately 16.0

square miles, lying predominantly in Lakewood. The Lakewood

Gulch channel, subject of this study, meanders eastward between

Colfax Avenue and West 6th Avenue, from Jefferson County at

U.S. Highway 6 near the westerly boundary between Lakewood and

Jefferson County. The channel is tributary to the South Platte

River in the vicinity of Colfax Avenue in Denver. The Lakewood

Gulch watershed is essentially fully developed in the City of

Denver and in the easterly portiond the City of Lakewood; it

is partially developed in the western portion of Lakewood and

Jefferson County. Because of the relatively intense urbaniza-

tion in some parts of the drainage basin, the storm runoff has

increased over natural conditions and some residents along

Lakewood Gulch have stated that flood damage and inconvenience

have occurred.

Presented in this report is a conceptual Master Plan for
development of the Lakewood Gulch drainageway in the Cities of
Lakewood, Denver, and the County of Jefferson. The studied
channel reach is 8.41 miles long, of which 5.45 miles are in
Lakewood, 2.34 miles are in Denver, and 0.62 miles are in
Jefferson County.

The Master Plan is presented by way of plan and profile sheets
depicting the recommended improvements to the channel.

The first of two construction phases is presented as the

Master Plan with a detailed discussion of costs and benefits.

In reaches where a second construction phase is recommended,

a typical cross-section exhibits the limits of the improvements.

A cost estimate for the second construction phase was prepared,

where applicable, and shown following the estimate for the first

construction phase, opposite each plan and profile sheet.

The following paragraphs of this Section summarize the detailed
information contained in the subsequent sections of this report.
This presents a synopsis of the analyses performed and the
elements of the recommendations.

Hydrologic and Hydraulic Analyses

Detailed analyses were made of the anticipated rainfall in the

Lakewood Gulch watershed for the 2-, 5-, 10-, and 100-year rain-

storms, and the limits of flooding which would result from the

storms were determined.

Development of Alternative Plans

The report titled "Phase A Preliminary Report on Major Drainage-

way Planning on Lakewood and McIntyre Gulches," (Reference 5)
