I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I CULTURAL RESOURCES SETTING A preliminary search and review of existing site files, previous investigations, and background literature vas performed to identify known cultural resources within, and in the immediate vicinity of a potential project area. A pedestrian site visit was also conducted, and the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has been notified that the feasibility of a flood control project is being studied. These investigations revealed three cultural resources sites within the study area. The first site is a historic building complex listed on the National Register of Historic Places and consists of: o The Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Northern Railroad track and bridge and the Rock Rapids train station. The other archeological sites are identified as: o Site 13L0101 (prehistoricl o Site 13L0430 (prehistoricl If a feasibility study is warranted, the SHPO should be contacted when the alternatives and impact areas are identified and again be asked for a formal, written determination regarding the presence and significance of cultural resources in the area. All cultural resources within the impact area should be systemically identified, evaluated, and assessed regarding project impacts to ensure compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION Rock Rapids is located in Lyon County in northwestern Iowa, approximately 6S miles north of Sioux City, Iowa.
